15 Best Cash Back Credit Cards – Reviews & Comparison

Cash-back credit cards are popular because they provide tangible, easy-to-understand benefits. Who doesn’t like getting a credit on their monthly credit card statement or, better yet, the actual cash deposited into the account of their choice? Cash-back credit cards can be even more popular than our top-rated gas credit cards and travel rewards cards .

But not all cash back credit cards are created equal.

Some offer the same rate of refund on all purchases. Others offer higher cash-back rates on certain expense categories, like groceries or gasoline, and lower rates on everything else. Others offer bonus cash back on expense categories that rotate quarterly. Some accumulate cash back on purchases and monthly payments.

And some cash back cards even fit hybrid models, with cash back on certain expense categories and different types of rewards (like airline miles) on others.

Best Cash Back Credit Cards

You’ll find each type of card on this list of the best cash back cards available to American consumers today.

Keep in mind that most cash back credit cards require applicants to have good to excellent credit, usually indicated by a FICO credit score greater than 700 and sometimes even higher. If you don’t meet that threshold, work to build your credit before applying.

1% cash back when you spend + 1% cash back when you pay your balance; 0% APR on balance transfers for 18 months

Citi Double Cash’s two-tier cash back program rewards cardholders who pay off their balances in full each month.

As long as you are a cardholder in good standing, you are guaranteed to earn 1% cash back on all eligible purchases posted to your Double Cash account. But you’ll only achieve the card’s 2% effective cash-back rate when you pay off your balance in full, as you should, under normal circumstances.

Two percent cash back isn’t the only Double Cash benefit worth promoting. The card’s 18-month 0% APR balance transfer promotion is among the best in its category, and the value-added benefits are unusually generous for a card with no annual fee.

  • Sign Up Bonus : There is currently no sign up bonus on the Citi Double Cash card. Check back for updates.
  • Cash back rate – Get an unlimited 1% cash back on all purchases when they sign up to your account, then another 1% cash back on all balance payments, for an effective total cash back rate 2% when you pay your balance in full. You must make at least the minimum payment to qualify for the 1% cash back rate on balance payments during that statement cycle. Refund expires after 12 months of account inactivity (no purchases or refunds).

3. Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

6% cash back at US supermarkets and select digital media services; 3% at US gas stations and transit operators (Including carpool); 1% elsewhere

If you love the grocery store, you’ll love the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express. You get 6% cash back on all US supermarket transactions, up to an annual spending limit of $ 6,000. Once you hit $ 6,000, you get a 1% cash back on purchases from US supermarkets.

You’ll also get a 6% cash back on eligible purchases with digital media and streaming providers like Netflix and HBO.

There is no spending cap on the US Transit Operator and Service Station categories, you ‘ll get 3% cash back for every $ 1 spent at those locations. American Express treats rideshare operators like Lyft and Uber as transit operators, which is great news for those who use those services frequently. And you’ll get 1% cash back on all other purchases, with no limits. Cash rebates accumulate as reward dollars that can be redeemed for statement credits.

A small downside to the Blue Cash Preferred card is American Express’s restrictive definition of “grocery store”. Supermarkets like Walmart, wholesale clubs like Costco, and alcoholic beverage retailers are not considered supermarkets for the purposes of this card.

And the annual fee of $ 95 (see the Fees and Fees page) slightly reduces your earning potential after the first year, when the annual fee is $ 0. But since the 6% cash back from the supermarket doubles What most competing cards offer, you are likely to get by if you take full advantage of this category.

If you’re struggling to meet your annual US supermarket spending limit of $ 6,000 on grocery and dry goods purchases only, make up the difference by purchasing gift cards from other merchants at the supermarket checkout counter. It’s like getting an immediate 6% discount at your favorite restaurants, retail stores, and e-commerce websites.

  • Welcome offer : Get 20% cash back on Amazon.com purchases with your card within 6 months of account opening, up to $ 200 cash back. Plus, get back $ 150 after spending at least $ 3,000 on purchases within the first 6 months. Cash rebates accumulate as reward dollars that can be redeemed for statement credits.

4% cash back on gas purchases at Costco locations and qualified service stations; 3% cash back on eligible restaurants and travel purchases; 2% cash back at Costco; 1% cash back anywhere else

The Costco Anywhere card is a premium cash back product exclusively for Costco members. If you’re already spending $ 60 per year (or $ 120, if you’re looking for executive membership) on a Costco membership, and can meet Citi’s strict underwriting requirements, this card is a no-brainer.

Why? For people with long trips, healthy budgets for travel and dining out, and long shopping lists from Costco, the four-tier cash back program is among the most generous. Yes, the redemption framework is a bit shaky – you have to redeem in person at Costco and you only get one chance per year to do so. But most Costco members shop often enough that this isn’t a huge inconvenience.

  • Registration bonus : this card currently has no registration bonus. Check back for updates.
  • Cash Back Rate : Earn 4% cash back on eligible gas purchases at Costco and eligible gas stations, up to the first $ 7,000 in eligible purchases per year. Get an unlimited 3% cash back on eligible restaurant and travel purchases. Get unlimited 2% cash back on eligible Costco purchases. Get unlimited 1% cash back on all other eligible purchases, including gas purchases above the $ 7,000 annual spending limit.
  • Redemption : At the close of your February statement, you will receive a redemption voucher for the full value of the rewards earned during the previous year. You must redeem this coupon in a single in-person transaction at Costco, either as a credit for purchases or for cash at the register (or both). The voucher remains valid until December 31 of the year of issue.
  • Introductory APR : None.
  • Key Fees : $ 0 with a paid Costco membership ($ 60 for a regular family membership and $ 120 for an executive membership). There is no foreign transaction fee. Cash advances cost the greater of $ 10 or 5%. Balance transfers cost between $ 5 or 3%, whichever is greater.

Final word

Even the most generous cash back credit cards rarely offer more than 5% cash back on any purchase. Cards that offer more than 2% or 3% cash back generally require cardholders to track specific expense categories or adhere to purchase limits.

In contrast, APRs for cash back credit cards typically range from 10% to more than 20% in some cases. At those rates, keeping a balance even for a single month can seriously affect your cash-back earnings. Typically having one more month-to-month balance cancels out your cash-back earnings, adding to the true cost of your purchases.

In other words, don’t let the cash-back promise put you to sleep and let your card balances grow over time. It is almost never worth it. If you need to keep a credit card balance from month to month, opt for a low APR credit card .

And if you are concerned about your ability to keep your credit card spending at a level that allows you to make full payments each month, choose a credit card with a low spending limit or a secured credit card that requires you to make a deposit. cash in advance. .
